Oxford martial arts club has the ring of success

A martial arts club in Oxford will soon be giving prospective members an additional reason to sign up, as a brand new boxing ring is added to its facilities following a major cash injection.

The club, which is called Next Level, can be found in Dorra Park Close, within the city’s Northway Community Centre. It was established there in 2011 by painter and decorator Tony Tassell, and has around 20 young people as members.

Now it has been awarded £1,095 by Oxfordshire County Council, for the purpose of building a ring which will measure 10ft by 10ft. Once this is complete, the club will have the option of using the poster printing provided by a Print company in Oxford, ensuring potential new members know all about it.

Tassell told a reporter from the Oxford Times:

“We need a boxing ring because we have students in kickboxing competitions and it would be good for them to learn things such as getting out of a corner.

“Martial arts is great for the children and it helps with their self-discipline and their self-esteem.”

At present there are three coaches at the club teaching youngsters kickboxing, MMA and taekwondo, but having secured funding – with the assistance of Mark Lygo, the county councillor for Northway – there is every chance that it will be able to offer even more to the community.
