Arts festival to launch next year

A brand new festival for the performing arts, which is expected to launch in Oxford next summer, will feature up to 50 performances within a one-week period.

Performers and arts companies can now submit their applications for the Offbeat Festival, which will take place at the town centre venues Arts at the Old Fire Station and Oxford Playhouse.

The festival will consist of a blend of live music performances, dance, comedy and theatre – with the shows set to be divided between the two venues on George Street and Beaumont Street.

Oxford Playhouse and Arts at the Old Fire Station came up with the idea for it earlier in the year and it will mark the first occasion that these two organisations have collaborated.

It is intended to provide people living in the city with a chance to see performances from across Britain and the Old Fire Station’s Director of Arts, Jeremy Spafford, told the Oxford Mail that:

“We thought: ‘Let’s pack in as many shows as we can to give Oxford a real chance to experience some of the best-quality work around’. We’re also assuring that the work of local companies gets shown as well. We’ll be protecting space in the program so they will be profiled.”

The festival will take place in June next year and can use catalogue printers in Oxford to provide glossy Catalogues detailing the shows.
