Star-studded show to launch Leeds Year of Culture
A special show has been announced for the start of next year in Leeds, which will serve as the launching pad for the city’s Year of Culture programme that will run throughout 2023.
This show has been given the title ‘The Awakening’ and will be a celebration of the current era in Leeds, as well as its past and its future. The twin directors for the show will be the Slung Low artistic director Alan Lane and Leeds 2023 chief executive and creative director Kully Thiarai. The roster that they have announced for it includes some starry names.
Local rock band LYR are on the bill alongside jazz singer Corinne Bailey Rae and Simon Armitage, the Leeds-born Poet Laureate. Sports presenter Gabby Logan will host it as part of her Leeds 2023 chairwoman duties, with the help of former footballer Sanchez Payne.

The venue for ‘The Awakening’ will be Headingley Stadium, which is the home stadium of rugby side Leeds Rhinos. Other acts that are set to perform include Graft, a rapper from the city, R&B singer Ntantu and the Chorus of Opera North.
It is scheduled to take place on 7th January 2023.
