As the venue for the Tour de France Grand Depart, Leeds Town Hall had the whole world watching it recently, but the increasing disrepair of parts of the building has been acknowledged by council bosses.
Now, senior officials within the council have given the nod to a feasibility study examining what investment would be required to restore the hall to its former glory.
The building is Grade One listed and readers of the Yorkshire Evening Post voted it their favourite in a 2011 poll, but major renovations need to be applied to the roof, while the disability access also urgently needs to be upgraded. The intention is for the feasibility report to be used to support an application for funding to Heritage Lottery, and any such campaign will also have the option of using publicity poster printing from a Leeds Print company, potentially boosting local support.
Lucinda Yeadon, the council’s culture spokeswoman, stated at a recent council cabinet meeting that the hall represented a “particular jewel in our cultural crown”, before affirming the need for some areas of the building to be improved.
At one time the town hall, which dates back to 1858, served as a hub for municipal services – including the police station, courts, and the Lord Mayor’s offices.
