Ledston Hall holds listed status but is currently not in use, and the charity organisation in charge of it, The Wheler Foundation, wants to turn sections of it into housing.
The proposals would also see a brand new energy facility built adjacent to the main hall, as well as the addition of car parking and public space for those not residing there.
Speaking to a reporter from the Yorkshire Evening Post, Cllr Ronald Grahame stated that it was a beautiful idea and added:
“The scheme will benefit the community, and this building has got to be saved. There are too many pluses associated with this initiative, and it should be looked at as a community asset.”
Should the project be completed, the foundation will have the option of calling on brochure printers in Leeds, to supply materials showcasing the amenities in the new homes.
National Lottery funding is providing some of the financing for the project, but the Wheler Foundation has stated that it is capable of securing further money should it prove to be necessary.
The scheme has also won the complete backing of English Heritage, with Ledston Hall having been featured on its register of ‘at risk’ buildings for several years now.
