The Radius software runs in conjunction with Google Maps, providing those who download it with information about any independent businesses or creative undertakings that are within close reach of them while they are in the city.
It is hoped that this will make more people aware of what is happening there, and provide backing for local firms in the way that places offering business card and business Stationery printing in Leeds already do.
Leeds Ventures, an independent company based in the city that handles schemes intended to improve the experience of its visitors, is behind the app, and its development director, David Laycock, commented:
“One of the main drivers behind this was, I used to be the centre director at Trinity Leeds. Leeds was quite clearly a shopping destination but I was conscious at the time that Leeds didn’t have, before, a reputation for having independent businesses.”
He added that he knew there was a healthy variety of such firms in need of promotion, support and connections, with the app being intended to provide them with this.
Furthermore, as Laycock pointed out, the reputation Leeds enjoys as a centre for the creative and digital industries means that using a cutting edge app to promote this made sense.
