Storytelling will be celebrated in Southampton
The Storytelling Festival is to be launched from Hedge End’s Berry Theatre in April.
Southampton’s Berry Theatre is using the festival to promote creative writing of all kinds. This project ties in with the development programme of Write Now and booklet printing from Southampton Hedge End can be used to showcase the events.
The needs of a variety of age groups will be catered for. Students at Winchester University will communicate their work to others on the first night of the festival. Other workshops have been pencilled in for much of the following fortnight. People will be told how to adapt their efforts for songwriting, stage performances and video games.
Matt Beames, the associate writer at the Berry Theatre, is due to go on a tour of local libraries. At various locations in Southampton and Eastleigh, Beames will engage families with a blend of stories, songs and puppets.
A retelling of The Odyssey will be presented at the Lyngo Theatre. Patrick Lynch, a presenter of CBeebies programmes, has an important role to play in this adaptation. The narrative has been shaped into a format which can be easily understood by a modern audience.
Meanwhile, a creative collaboration by schoolchildren is to receive the digital treatment. An app called Story Shuffle is to get the green light from a variety of libraries.
