Southampton station helps local community

A local community in Southampton has been helped by its town train station.

Donating and collecting more than 600 presents to its local community, Hedge End station in Southampton has helped many people around the area over Christmas.

The collection of presents for distribution originally began at the Hedge End station office, when Sheree Whetrun, Community Ambassador for South Western Railway (SWR), decided she wished to start an appeal for the elderly during Christmas. Individuals and enterprises organising charitable projects can rely on professional printers to create branded letterheads for their communications.

The ambassador originally set up a single collection box at the Hedge End station, however after discussing her project with colleagues across the network, she established gifting boxes at multiple SWR stations.

Commenting on the experience she said:

“I am amazed by the generosity of all the colleagues who have donated and who have given money through.”

The charitable initiative was also developed to include not just the elderly, but also families in need of aid. Gifts donated included toys for kids, aftershave, perfume for teenagers and helpful items for older members of the community including hot water bottles and extra blankets.

While in 2020, donations to the stations arrived from railway personnel, this year Whetrun intends to extend the scheme, inviting passengers to take part and make gifts as well.
