What's Happening in Eastleigh, England…

Record-breaking line of toy cars created in Hampshire

A spectacular line of toy vehicles was put together in Hampshire recently, and it was so long that it made a new world record.

At almost two kilometres in length, it took those involved in excess of 10 hours to set up.

Andy Ollerenshaw, from the Hampshire village of Beaulieu, has said:

“A big thank you to everybody who donated vehicles. It has been a tremendous response from the public and for the staff at [Beaulieu National Motor Museum] it has been a lot of work but everyone has pitched in and helped.”

The local motor museum was central to beating the existing world record. The line of toy vehicles included almost 10,000 cars – more than the line that had established the former record, in the German town of Füssen, had possessed.

Donations to the event were made by individuals attending supermarkets in Fareham, Southampton and Hedge End. After the record was achieved, the cars were sold to help fundraise for children’s hospices. If local hospices like Jacksplace and Naomi House wish to benefit from further charitable events, organisers could use poster printing in Southampton (Hedge End) to generate some of the necessary publicity.

Various celebrities assisted with the successful attempt on the record. These included Quentin Wilson, Vicki Butler-Henderson, and Stirling Moss. The presence of the motoring presenters and the racing driver certainly added to the excitement on the day. Public interest was also heightened by the fact that real cars were on show as well as the toys.
