Mobile coupon redemption on the rise

The blending of traditional and electronic advertising looks set to ramp up in 2013 thanks to the popularity of mobile vouchers and coupons, according to a report from a Hampshire-based research firm.

Juniper Research, based in Hampshire, recently published a report claiming that 10 billion mobile vouchers and coupons will be redeemed this year, which is a 50% increase on the amount redeemed in 2012.

Mobile vouchers are coupons that customers download to their mobile device or smartphone that are then scanned at a till point to give a discount. This increase in redemption means that retailers across the UK are looking to change the way they interact with customers at the point of purchase, whether this means upgrading their electronic till equipment to be able to accept mobile vouchers or reviewing the way in which messages are communicated when it comes to pos printing.

Southampton, Portsmouth and Hampshire are already home to retailers using mobile coupons as a new way to attract customers. Pos printing is evolving and retailers can now encourage more sales in shops by printing messages like ‘scan for you discount voucher’ on point of sale collateral.

The author of the report, Dr Winsor Holden, said:

“While we've heard that online retail is killing the High Street – [see] the recent administrations of Jessop's and Blockbuster in the UK – mobile offers a means of engaging with the consumer at every point in the retail lifecycle, from product discovery to product purchase.”
