Basingstoke volunteer receives national recognition
A man from Hampshire has won a prize for being a regular volunteer at a British Heart Foundation (BHF) charity shop for over a decade.
Alfred Hedges, the volunteer in question, has said:
The BHF is always in need of publicity, and its various retail outlets must get the attention of the public. As a result, the staff at the shop where Hedges works may decide to use full colour printing in Southampton (Hedge End) if they want to produce some leaflets in the future.
Hedges has mentioned how many friends he has made as a volunteer. He has also commented that many of the other volunteers have given a lot of time and energy to the charity.
The manager of the shop, Tony Temple, has commented favourably on the reliability of Hedges. In particular, he has praised the exemplary attendance record of the volunteer.
Hedges received his prestigious award during the course of Volunteers Week. This annual event is intended to highlight the social contribution which volunteers make. Mags O’Halloran, who is another BHF manager, has stressed how important volunteers are to the organisation.

“I worked by BHF before retiring so volunteering was always something I wanted to do. It’s no hardship – it’s something I really enjoy. I will definitely carry on for as long as I am able to.”
