These plans would see a cinema that has five screens constructed within the Grand Arcade on St Andrews Street, Cambridge. In addition to these new screens, the proposed venue would also have its own bar and restaurant facilities, and would take over a total of three units within the centre. The application is seeking to add plant equipment to the roof of the Grand Arcade as part of the project.
The chosen units are on the centre’s first floor and were previously occupied by the retail outlets Charles Clinkard, Topman and Topshop. However, they are currently lying empty and the application states that, if permission is granted for a change of use, jobs for around 40 people would be created.
It may also lead to opportunities for local businesses, such as brochure printing shops in Cambridge that would be able to provide the cinema with Brochures detailing its current and upcoming film schedules.
According to the Cambridge Independent, the application says:
“The proposed cinema will reinvigorate an active frontage on the first floor of Grand Arcade, which will attract footfall to the shopping centre and wider city centre.”
It is hoped that the cinema could open within two years.
