The leaflet was produced by the council to explain how the proposed bypass in Ely would impact the surrounding area. The leaflet is printed over four pages and contains illustrations that give an artist's impression of how the bypass would look. The leaflet has been produced using full colour digital printing. Cambridge and Ely residents wishing to obtain a copy can do so by contacting the local council.
Councillor Ian Bates, who is the cabinet minister for growth and planning, explained that he understood the aesthetic effect the new bypass may have but was sure that the sacrifices would be justified by the practicality of the new route, with journey times for residents cut significantly.
Bates continued:
"We have also researched a locally suggested alternative, known as the hidden bypass. It would start from a new roundabout on Angel Drove, pass under the main railway line and cross King's School playing fields back onto the A142.
"This would impact less on the landscape but our investigations determined it would not provide value for money or deliver the same benefits to the area as the bypass. The proposed southern bypass will be a huge benefit to the thriving market town of Ely, Cambridgeshire and the East as a whole.”
The council plans to submit a request for planning permission for the bypass by the summer of this year.
