Cambridge is set to get a brand new hospital specifically for children, with the confirmation that the government has signed off on the outline business case.
What that means is that a contractor to oversee the construction of the building can now be chosen. The completed facility will be called Cambridge Children’s Hospital, but it will serve youngsters from across the whole of East Anglia, not just within the city. The site that has been chosen for it is across the road from the Rosie Maternity Hospital, which is also home to the Royal Papworth and Addenbrooke’s.
After the news that it will be able to move forward was announced, Dr Rob Heuschkel from Cambridge Children’s Hospital, told BBC News that design work on the project had been ongoing for a lengthy period of time.
He went on to say that he was happy that things had now reached the stage where the actual construction could begin. Heuschkel then added that he was keen to say thank you to the staff at the current hospital and families from across East Anglia for providing their thoughts about how it should proceed.
