The researchers based in Cambridge joined forces with members of a business school in Oxford. Together they have produced a report called Scale-up UK: Growing Businesses, Growing our Economy. When researchers network they can use premium Business Cards to make a positive impression. The report was commissioned by Barclays and the chief executive of the organisation, Jed Staley, said:
“The challenges affecting business growth in the UK must be addressed for the sake of long-term economic growth and job creation. The report is one step towards helping more businesses achieve their growth ambitions, but it is an important step and one that we look forward to building on.”
The idea for the research began in Davos. Discussion within the World Economic Forum (WEF) between businesses and universities had highlighted the difficulties facing small firms wishing to take things to the next level.
CJBS is home to a centre for entrepreneurship. This hub contains a growth club for SMEs, which aims to help address some of the relevant issues. The researchers at CJBS, including Professor Stelios Kavadias, suggested that focusing on skills and management commitment could be productive for some start-ups. However, the work also stressed that the development of partnerships might be vital.
