Winter Carnival to return to York Region

The Richmond Hill Winter Carnival has announced that it will make its return this February with the 54th annual edition of the popular York Region event, and Vaughan residents may wish to attend.

The Carnival will feature traditional outdoor winter activities, including lumberjack and wood carving shows, as well as a Viking-themed display. Many activities are aimed at children, including crafts, games, a colouring contest and play igloos. Refreshments will include hot drinks and food, including a Saturday night spaghetti dinner and Sunday morning pancake breakfast. There will also be live, on-stage musical performances throughout the weekend and a chance to win prizes.

This will be the first in-person edition of the Carnival following public health-related cancellations, which saw the event replaced with a virtual scavenger hunt.

Other traditional aspects of the Carnival include the bird mascot Ookpik and the Sub-tonic Monks Zoosemobile, an interactive drum sculpture that allows kids to experiment with different sounds. Winter events like this use tools such as poster printing and local media advertising to bring people together even during chilly winter weather. Past editions of the Carnival have drawn as many as 8,000 visitors, including from surrounding areas such as Vaughan, and attracted major local sponsors.

The 2023 edition of the Richmond Hill Winter Carnival will take place at Mill Pond Park on February 4 and 5.
