What's Happening in Vaughan, ON…

Vaughan youngster becomes everyday hero

A child from Vaughan recently showed compassion and care for an elderly woman who seemed lost and in distress.

Eleven-year-old Leo Gallo was out with his friends when he saw a woman he recognized from when he had gone to visit his grandmother. The first time he went by, he didn’t think much about it, but when he passed her again on his way home, he became concerned that something may have been wrong.

Concetta Valela, 71, who suffers from Alzheimer’s disease, had gone for a walk to visit her daughter. However, when she got there and her daughter wasn’t at home, she decided to walk back. On her way there, she became lost and disoriented. Since it was a hot day, Valela was also beginning to feel dehydrated, at which point Gallo stepped in to help.

He asked her where she was going, and when she pointed in the wrong direction, he asked her to come back to his house. Once they were there, her gave her a cold drink and let his mother know what was going on. She drove Valela home, where her daughter was waiting.

Gallo’s quick thinking and caring attitude showed how having care and compassion can make a big difference. A professional printing company can create a special certificate recognizing instances of ‘everyday heroism’.
