What's Happening in Vaughan, ON…

Vaughan gallery to feature contemporary artist

An upcoming exhibit at Vaughan’s McMichael Canadian Art Collection will look to introduce viewers to the art of Wanda Koop, heralded as one of the best contemporary Canadian painters.

Koop is a Winnipeg-based painter whose 40-year career has recently gained recognition in galleries across Canada and the United States. Her works on display at the McMichael will showcase the use of light and abstract forms, including her paintings “Scandinavia Summer”, “Unseen-Seen, Glowing River” and “Reflect: Sea Foam Green, Opera Pink.”

This formal emphasis is reflected in the title of the exhibition, “Wanda Koop: Lightworks”, as well as the museum’s description of the display:

“Through the arrangement of these recent works into an ensemble of rare beauty, Koop will bring us realms of light as never before, and a rare glimpse into her deepest sources of inspiration.”

In addition to the paintings, the exhibitions will include Koop’s “Light Sticks” – long and thin three-dimensional works with vibrant colour patterns. The contemporary work will be on display alongside ongoing exhibitions such as “Generations”, a broad survey of Canadian art running until May 23, and the McMichael’s permanent collection of iconic Canadian artists, such as the Group of Seven. Art exhibits like this often including accompanying educational material ranging from brochure printing to lectures.

“Wanda Koop: Lightworks” will be on display at the McMichael Collection from May 21 to October 30.
