Vaughan exhibition to feature local painter

The McMichael Canadian Art Collection is set to dedicate an upcoming exhibition to Toronto-based painter Margaux Williamson.

Born in 1976, Williamson is a contemporary artist with decades of experience in the art world. The exhibition will display many of her signature interior portraits, which are often interpreted as a commentary on women’s relationships to everyday spaces.

The exhibition is designed to be complemented by readings and performances by prominent figures in numerous creative disciplines, a sign of the widespread influence that Williamson has had in Toronto’s artistic community. It also aims to put Williamson in the context of female art history.

Titled “Margaux Williamson: Interiors”, the exhibition is curated by Jessica Bradley, who previously put together a collection of the work of Marie-Claire Blais for the McMichael Collection in 2019. It will run alongside “From Water to Water”, a site-specific work by Indigenous artist Bonnie Devine, and collections of work by Tom Thomson, Jon Sasaki and other artists.

Gallery exhibitions like this, which often make use of tools like audio tours and brochure printing to provide key context, can be a major milestone in an artist’s career, as well as providing visitors a chance to trace their career.

Margaux Williamson: Interiors will run from November 6, 2021 to May 30, 2022 at the McMichael Canadian Art Collection in Vaughan.
