Comedy festival to return to Vaughan area
The annual JFL Toronto festival will be back in the Greater Toronto Area this fall, providing an assortment of stand-up comedy acts from around the world.
The festival is a spin-off of the world-renowned Just for Laughs festival in Montreal but has acquired a reputation of its own as a destination for comedy lovers. Headlining the festival is the award-winning comedian Iliza Shlesinger, known for her five Netflix specials, as well as her work as an actor and author; Daily Show host Trevor Noah; well-known actress and comedian Amy Schumer; and a number of other internationally famous acts. For more dedicated comedy fans, the line-up also includes cult favourites like Mike Birbiglia, Maria Bamford, and Marc Maron.
In addition to the traditional stand-up format, the festival will include a special “In Conversation with” event featuring Issa Rae, the acclaimed creator of HBO’s Insecure; and former talk show host Craig Ferguson. JFL Toronto will also include live episode tapings for podcasts, such as The Bald and the Beautiful and Not Another D&D Podcast. The line-up of 42 events is designed to draw in comedy lovers of all stripes from Toronto and other Southern Ontario areas such as Vaughan. Festivals such as these, typically advertised through tools such as poster printing and local media, draw on the renewed popularity of stand-up comedy stemming from the proliferation of podcasts and streaming specials.
