The one-day meet brought out over 800 swimmers. It was held on February 16 at the Etobicoke Olympium. Gold medals were won by Mississauga schools in 37 of the 58 events. The athletes represented 36 area schools.
The men’s relay was won by athletes attending St. Marcellinus. The team consists of Kyle Xavier, Tyler Chuang, Andrew Illman and Rafael Portaluppi. They overtook the Mayfield team in the final seconds of the relay and had a winning time of 1:52.58.
Two gold medals were won by Daniella Gray of St. Marcellinus. She took top place in the women’s 100-metre breaststroke with a time of 1:26.18, as well as taking first place in the women’s 50-metre freestyle in 30.49 seconds.
Gray said:
“This is amazing. This is the best meet I’ve ever been to and I love the competition. You do it for your school but at the same time, there’s a personal feeling of accomplishment.”
Erindale Secondary School student, Nicolette Goncalves, won the gold medal in the 100-metre butterfly for girls aged 13 to 18. Goncalves is in grade 12. She also took home a silver medal in the 200-metre women’s freestyle.
The senior women’s title was once again won by Mayfield. This is the fourth year Mayfield has met this accomplishment. In addition, for the past two years, Mayfield won the combined championship overall.
