People from all over the Greater Toronto Area recently came together in Mississauga to help celebrate the contributions that Italian Canadians have made to the culture of the city.
The day-long Italfest was held in Celebration Square and featured a variety of Italian cultural performances, food stalls, a pasta-eating competition, and other activities geared to appeal to all ages.
The opening of the festival was marked by a color parade of reenactors from the Associazione Bersaglieri Toronto, who recreated the distinctive look of the Italian Light Infantry Corps. They all sported one of the elite corps’ hats, each of which was decorated with hundreds of black grouse fathers. The marchers moved along by using their unique “jogging march” style, while rousing music played over the loud speakers.
Three different groups from southern Italy took center stage. Orchestra del Sud, Muse del Mediterraneo and Pietra Montecorovino all gave crowd-pleasing musical performances.
A bocce ball competition was held on the square’s patch of synthetic grass.
It was the second year for Italfest, and at least 12,000 visitors were expected to come out and take part in the fun.
