London to host Ontario Games

The Ontario Summer Games has announced a new schedule for its next event, with London hosting the best young athletes from across the province in the summer of 2021.

The four-day sporting event will see over 3,000 competitors aged 12-18 competing in 19 sports. The 2018 event saw the addition of soccer, with teams qualifying through the Ontario Premier Development League, alongside favourites like volleyball, athletics and softball. The event is hosted by Games Ontario, and will use the organization’s porcupine mascot Pachi. It will be the fourth time London has hosted the Games, along with other amateur events like the Ontario Winter Games in 2005 and Canada Summer Games in 2001.

The Ontario Summer Games will be a volunteer-based event, including the efforts of over 700 people. Events like these often rely on community efforts, ranging from catering from nearby restaurants to championship banner printing services from local Print shops. The Games organizers have also estimated that the event will provide a $5 million economic boost to the London area.

The 26th edition of the Ontario Summer Games will take place in summer 2021 at venues around London. The Games were originally scheduled for this year, beginning on July 30, but were rescheduled, giving young athletes an extra year to prepare and develop their skills. Specific dates will be announced in the months to come.
