London seminar hopes to encourage diversity

A London, Ontario event next week aims at helping businesses embrace diversity and inclusion of marginalized groups.

The seminar, entitled ‘Diversity & Inclusion – Journey Beyond Demographics’ is hosted by the London branch of the International Association of Business Communicators (IABC). Its goal is to help local organisations and businesses translate their good intentions into practices which will actually make them more inclusive.

The seminar will feature three speakers from the local community: Dharshi Lacey, director of Pillar Nonprofit; Michele Manocchi, an education specialist with the London Cross Cultural Learner Centre; and Saleha Khan, the city of London’s Diversity & Inclusion Specialist. The curriculum will include contemporary diversity concerns, the financial effects of inclusion, and concrete steps that businesses can take. In addition to the educational value, seminars such as these can be helpful to make connections between small businesses and nonprofits, with Business Cards and promotional Pens often exchanged.

The session will take place on the evening of Tuesday, April 30 at the Goodwill Industries on Horton Street. Interested attendees are encouraged to register in advance. The IABC is an international organisation designed to raise professional standards, and has a large membership in Canada. Its members typically work or study within the areas of communication, marketing, and creative services. IABC London will celebrate its 40th anniversary this June with a ‘Ruby Jubilee’ party.
