London North donut chain eyes expansion

BoxCar Donuts, a London North cafe, recently announced that it will be expanding its operations to St. Thomas this summer, with plans for further growth on the way.

The new donut shop will be part of a combined location with sister company Commonwealth Coffee. It will serve the same fare as the two London Boxcar locations along Richmond Street, with artisanal donuts whose flavours range from everyday classics like Boston Cream and Apple Fritter to more unusual offerings like churro and biscoff cheesecake. The store rotates its flavours so that there are new ones available every week, with some donuts only available on particular days. There will also be artisanal coffee, including multiple flavours of lattes and cold brews.

The new store is expected to employ 10 to 15 jobs to the St. Thomas area, in line with Boxcar’s two London stores. BoxCar announced the move on social media in the lead-up to the store’s third anniversary. The St. Thomas store is the first part of a planned expansion across Southwestern Ontario, with two to five stores in the works for the rest of 2022. Windsor has already been announced as the next location. Local and regional chains often use promotional tools like flyer printing and local radio or television advertisement to compete with more well-known establishments.

BoxCar Donuts has said it will construct its St. Thomas location in July with an opening later this year, with the new store located at 308 Wellington Street.
