CMA Ontario sets London awards for October

The Country Music Association of Ontario has announced a new date for its annual awards, which will still be held in London.

While Canadian country music may be more associated with the West, the most populous province has a budding scene. The annual award ceremony, the culmination of a weekend of festivities, is a chance to promote and foster that community, with awards given out in categories like Roots Artist or Group of the Year and Francophone Artist or Group of the Year.

Most awards are sponsored by local country stations or businesses. The big winners from last year’s awards were Meghan Patrick (who took five awards including Album, Songwriter and Female Artist of the Year), and The Reklaws (who claimed Single Artist and Group or Duo of the Year honours).

Nominees and winners are chosen through a series of three ballots, with a separate public voting round held for the Fans’ Choice Award. Radio stations and behind-the-scenes producers and executives are also honoured. Despite the competitive nature of awards, ceremonies like this can be a collective celebration or an opportunity for networking. Even country singers may carry a pocket full of Business Cards or Promotional Products.

The eighth annual edition of the CMA Ontario Awards and accompanying festivities were originally set for the weekend of May 28 to 31, but will now take place from October 1 to 4, with the culminating awards ceremonies taking place on the evening of the 4th at Centennial Hall. It will be the third time the awards have been hosted in London in the last four years.
