A Langley blueberry farmer recently got a welcome surprise, thanks to his grandson and social media.
The season has been hot and dry, which resulted in the harvest being ready earlier than expected. There were not many people available to pick them, and for Gert Weller, this meant that he could lose much of his crop.
When his grandson Rob found out about the problem, he decided to take action. He put the word out, along with a picture of his grandfather at the farm gate, on social media. He said that an older gentleman was having trouble with the harvest, and included information about the farm’s location, as well as the hours it would be open and what the price was for the berries. Before long, a crowd of people who wanted to help came out to lend a hand collecting the fruit.
Mr. Weller, who was unaware that the story had been released, was surprised to see a large number of people coming out to his field, and even more so when they wanted to have their picture taken with him. When he found out what was going on, he was reportedly very pleased.
