Seed saving has been practiced for centuries by farmers and others developing their own plant strains and cultivars, and an event that will bring this practice into the 21st century will soon be on offer in Langley.
The Derek Doubleday Arboretum will be celebrating sustainable horticulture when it hosts its Seedy Saturday event. The Langley Environmental Partners Society (LEPS) is one of the organizers of the day, and it will be jam-packed with information, giveaways and other fun.
The activity will begin in the morning and continue on until the afternoon. It will be an in-person affair, and everyone can take in the presentations offered the guest speakers, browse through the assorted vendor displays and booths and take home free, nutrient-rich manure to provide a treat for their own garden. The seed swap may be one of the main draws for the attendees, and they can bring some to exchange or pick some up to grow at home.
The seed-swapping movement gives home horticulturalists a chance to be more sustainable, and some even choose to take the next step and begin developing their own cultivars. Envelopes for storing seeds, pamphlets and other materials can all be prepared by area Stationery printers.
The Seedy Saturday celebration will run from 9:00 am until 1:00 pm on March 23rd at the Derek Doubleday Arboretum.
