More than three dozen people from Langley and surrounding communities recently took part in a New Year’s Day tradition that is popular all over the country. They took to the icy waters of the Fraser River in the third annual Fort Langley Polar Bear
Swim.
Those who decided to take the plunge ranged from kids to adults, and the first to brave the cold was Martin Phillips-Hing. He remarked to the Langley Advance that he had taken part in similar swims when he was younger, and he was really looking forward to being able to go home for a hot shower as soon as his dip was over.
The countdown began and when it was over, everyone in the crowd ran into the river to celebrate. Most ran right back out again, but some lasted as long as 30 seconds.
With many of participants choosing to simply wear their usual bathing suits some came decked out in costumes. Many were first time “Polar Bears”, and were nervous about the prospect of entering the frigid water.
Events such as these can be great to raise money for charity and bring communities together. Banner printing can be an ideal advert for such an event.
Those considering taking part in the 2016 Polar Bear Swim may want to prepare now. It is certainly a different way to welcome in the New Year.
