A rare visitor has been spotted in Langley, and the public is being asked to help him find his way home.
A Harris Hawk, which is an uncommon bird of prey from the Southwestern United States, was last seen in the area of Brydon Lagoon. According to his owner, the bird provides a valuable service to blueberry and other farmers by scaring away birds like starlings that can eat or otherwise damage their crops, and is thought of as a natural form of pest control.
The hawk was performing this task when he flew away in September.
Owner Antoni Podszywa noted that the three-year-old predator is a very good hunter, and quite capable of taking care of himself. He asked that the public be on the lookout for him. He remarked that he will likely be wearing leg straps and a bell on his leg. He also asked that people not try to feed him, as, should they do so, he will just end up taking what they offer and then escape all over again.
