An upcoming activity that gives people all over Canada a chance to become citizen scientists will take place in early winter, and everyone is encouraged to get involved.
The Birds Canada Christmas Bird Count is right around the corner, and one of the planned activities will be taking place at Brydon Lagoon in Langley. Called Christmas Bird Count for Kids and Youth, it will be a family friendly occasion, and strollers and other mobility devices are welcome.
The registrants in the function will walk around the lagoon, making and recording observations as they go. The data they collect will be compiled with results from other locations, providing Bird Studies Canada and other organizations with a snapshot of how birds, especially indicator species, are doing. Those who are interested are asked to register through the Explore Science Club, and there is no charge to get involved.
Encouraging the public to take part in environmental activities may help to create a new generation of nature enthusiasts. Print shops can provide field guides, as well as other colourful materials that encourage families to get out and explore, for activities like this.
