The Special Olympics BC Summer Games are coming to Langley for four days next month and organizers have launched an appeal to find volunteers who are willing to help out.
Athletes will be coming from all over the province to compete in the games and at least 1,000 helpers are needed to ensure it all goes smoothly.
The winners of the contests will go on to compete in the Canada Games, which will be held in Vancouver in 2014. There are expected to be 1,100 athletes competing in 11 sports and 400 coaches will also be in attendance. Sports events will include rhythmic gymnastics, power lifting and basketball. Those chosen to take part in the games qualified through regional Special Olympics events.
The torch run for the games took place on June 7. Law enforcement members and Special Olympics athletes took turns running with the torch. Onlookers also paid $25 for the chance to take part in the run, which began in the Lower Mainland and finished on Vancouver Island.
Many of the events will be streamed online for web users, including the opening ceremony which will take place on July 11 from 7:00 - 8:30pm. Souvenirs will also be available for purchase during the games.
Langley printing companies will most likely be providing services to the organizers, such as banner and poster printing.
