After eight years in use, the Green Routine, which is the current program for waste collection, is set to be updated to reflect the current city makeup.
The program was introduced to residents in 2008 and since then has not been revised. According to 2015 analysis, waste diversion from landfill has reached 60%, and there has been no change in this rate since the program’s inception.
Common issues the waste collection faces include organics being contaminated, overflowing waste carts, and underuse of both the blue Bags and organics cart. This caused the Strathcona County Utilities to conduct an audit, as well as communicate with residents about proper use of each waste receptacle.
The audit was so successful that the County has decided to conduct annual audits to continue to learn and evolve the waste collection process.
After the audit, Utilities tendered the waste collection business through its procurement process and the business was awarded to Green For Life Environmental Corp (GFL). After winning the contract, GFL reviewed the waste collection and provided recommendations to make the process more efficient.
For instance, residents will soon use a new schedule of waste collection. The communication will come in several Forms, including tags printed by a professional printing company placed on each resident’s cart, on the Strathcona website as well as newspaper ads.Get a Free Quote for Forms Get a Free Quote for Bags
