Sherwood Park residents able to celebrate World Snow Day

With a global project taking place next month to celebrate the snowy outdoors, the Strathcona Wilderness Centre near Sherwood Park is due to hold a celebration of its own to mark the occasion.

The Ardrossan-based facility is set to hold the Beaver Hills Bioblitz in January, part of the event launched originally by the International Ski Federation (FIS).

It is set to be jointly hosted by the centre and the Alberta Chapter of Wildlife Society, as well as Nature Alberta and the Beaver Hills Initiative. Visitors will have the chance to take a snow shoe trek, do some skiing, and learn how to study wildlife using Signs, sounds, and tracks.

There will be plenty of winter treats to be enjoyed, such as hot chocolate, a campfire, and a scavenger hunt in which participants can win prizes. Professional biologists will be on hand to talk about the nature of the area, and to answer questions. The event is also collecting non-perishable food items for the Strathcona Food Bank.

Visitors from the area, including those from Sherwood Park, will likely have the chance to pick up some information provided by the biologists. This may include Brochures and Booklets that were created by local Stationery printers.

The Beaver Hills Bioblitz is being held at the Strathcona Wilderness Centre on January 18th from 1:00pm - 4:00pm. Admission is free. To find out more about the day’s events, call 780-922-3939.
