Athletes in Sherwood Park have a lot to be proud of in the way of 2014 achievements, according to sources.
Figure skater Kaetlyn Osmond won a silver medal at the Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia, while Mike Riddle won another silver in the half pipe skiing event. Sherwood Park saw another success at the Games, when goalie Shannon Szabados helped win the gold medal in the Canadian Woman’s Hockey Team.
David Elliott, 13, won every event he took part in, including a gold medal at the Abu Dhabi World Professional Jiu-Jitsu Championship, and diver Jacob Zimmel, 11, grabbed a win at the Junior Pan-American Diving Championships.
Ryan Nickifor and George Hobern, volleyball members of Canada’s U-21 Team, also from Sherwood Park, helped win the semifinals at the North and Central American and Caribbean Championships, to earn a spot in the FIVB World Championships.
Further, Sherwood Park hosted competitions in 2014, like the Canada 55+ Games that took place in August, involving over 2000 participates and their families. After that event, Sherwood Park then welcomed the Tour of Alberta international cycling race.
The world’s longest indoor soccer game, spanning 48 hours, was held at Millennium Place in Sherwood Park, setting the Guinness World Record.
