Bonsai is a horticultural technique that has been practiced for many years. Although it originated in China and Japan, it is an art form that is now practiced all over the world, and a Sherwood Park workshop will offer an introduction to the skills and equipment needed to grow an indoor bonsai tree.
Salisbury Greenhouse will be hosting the event, and it is intended for those who are new to the practice of cultivating bonsais. It will cover the basics needed to grow and care for one of these miniature tree plantings at home, and the ticket price is $50.
All of the students in the class will go home with a knowledge of the history of this horticultural technique, as well as what varieties of trees are best suited to the beginner. They will also learn about trimming, transplanting, training and also basic plant care, and it will give them a solid foundation they can build on in the future as they care for their own tree. Print shops can prepare manuals that can be given to each attendee in this type of workshop so they can continue to learn even after it is over.
The registration fee for the class includes the cost of the growing container, starting tree fertilizer, soil, and wire for training. The organizers have requested that people do not bring in outside plants, as this can introduce diseases and other pests into the greenhouse.
Salisbury Greenhouse, which can be found at 52337 Range Road 232 in Sherwood Park, is offering this workshop on February 9. Its start time is 2:00 pm.
