Sand garden workshop to be hosted by Salisbury Greenhouse

Working in a sand garden is a Japanese tradition that goes back many years. Seen as a way of achieving calmness and tranquility, Sherwood Park’s Salisbury Greenhouse is hosting a workshop where the participants will recreate this type of landscape feature on a small scale.

The free event will teach members of the public how they can use a few simple items to create their very own small size sand garden. A $10 deposit is required to hold a space in the class, and this can be used to purchase plants and other materials on the day of the activity.

The Zen-style garden will include a bonsai tree and will follow landscape design principles in common use today. The piece, which can include a sand rake, is suitable for a home or office, and the attendees will discover for themselves how relaxing it can be to work their own small plot.

While a plant will be incorporated in the design, the registrants for this event are asked to not bring any outside materials into the greenhouse, as this can spread diseases and other pests. Sheets that provide more details about how to care for a new sand garden can be prepared to hand out during a workshop like this by area Stationery printers.

Salisbury Greenhouse can be found at 52337 Range Road 232 in Sherwood Park. The workshop has been planned for the morning of July 7.
