Quad Graphics of Wisconsin acquired nine Canadian plants from Worldcolor of Montreal, the former Quebcor World in a deal closed three months ago. American spokespeople have laid out the company’s long-term plans to invest $23 million among eight national operations while closing a plant in Quebec. The St.-Jean-sur-Richelieu plant will wind down by the end of 2010 with 270 people being laid off in the shutdown. The other eight plants across the country will share the $23 million set aside for infrastructure improvements. In the shuffle, the printing services by Sherwood Park in the city’s east side, will shift its focus to retail insert, brochure printing and directory business. Magazine and other commercial jobs will be shipped to the Aurora, Ont., facility. Thirty positions in Edmonton will be made redundant.
Quad Graphics chairman and CEO says despite the take over and dismantling some of Worldcolor’s operations, the company remains committed to Canada.
