Daly/Pepper exhibit at Art Gallery @ 501

The Daly/Pepper exhibit will be showing at the Art Gallery @501 in Sherwood Park, AB until June 29. Kathleen Daly and George Pepper were two of Canada’s greatest painters and were both greatly influenced by artists such as the Group of Seven. This exhibit concentrates on their Alberta mountain-scape oil paintings from the 1940s to 1950s. Exhibits like these inspire companies who provide Print services to find a way of incorporating similar designs into their commercial products.

George Pepper was born in 1903. He became an official war artist during World War I. He married Kathleen Daly in 1929. In 1960, the couple immersed themselves in the study of Inuit art. Pepper also taught at the Ontario College of Art. Art works by both Pepper and Daly are located in many Canadian and international art galleries such as the National Gallery in Ottawa.

The Art Gallery @ 501 is a new gallery. Its mission is

“drawing on collective histories and enhancing knowledge and appreciation of the visual arts.”

The gallery is open Monday, Wednesday, Friday from 10am-6pm, Tuesday and Thursday from 10am to 8pm, Saturday from 10am-4pm and Sunday from noon-4pm. It is located inside the community centre which also features a library.

It is important that we pay attention to the great Canadian artists of the past. The work of Daly and Pepper contained in this exhibit celebrates the beauty of Alberta. As with all great works of art, they help us to define ourselves.
