University of Alberta students win for synthetic biology project

Stationery printers in Edmonton may be interested in knowing that a local University of Alberta team won the gold medal for a project about synthetic biology. Among the necessities for said project was a poster informing people about the project.

The gold medal was for an E. coli assembly kit that was designed by undergraduate students at the University of Alberta. The victory came in the US city of Boston where the team travelled in order to compete at an international level. The name of the competition was the International Genetically Engineered Machine.

The gold medal-winning project was a simple kit available for high-school students that allowed them to build the DNA of E. coli, called a plasmid, in just one afternoon in class. The thinking behind the undergraduate team’s project was to actually permit high-school students to actively partake in biology, instead of simply studying or reading about it in class.

The high-school student kit works in the following manner. In one afternoon, students would build a plasmid and then turn it into real E. coli cells. They would then know the experiment would be a success based on the color of the cells, which would turn red in the case of success.

While many specialists came together to make this project—engineers, biologists, computer scientists, and business students—the graphic designer who created the project’s poster and accompanying website was integral to getting the word out.

Stationer printers may want to be on the lookout for a job the next time that the team of undergraduates needs Posters done for one of their science projects. The team enters their next competition—their fifth overall—next summer.
