Edmonton to learn why native plants matter

While Edmonton may be in a deep freeze, its gardeners can still add to their knowledge of native plants when they attend a special presentation.

The Edmonton Permaculture Guild will be hosting an evening activity that will include members of the Edmonton Native Plant Society. It will be an engaging and educational event, and everyone will walk away with a deeper understanding of native species and why they matter.

The function may be valuable to gardeners, as well as others such as permaculture practitioners and landowners, and it will be focused on plant species found in Alberta. Everyone will learn how they are important sources of food and shelter for birds, insects and an assortment of mammals, and they can also positively impact water conservation and soil health.

The facilitator will discuss how native plants can be drought, pollution, pest and disease resistant, and they will also review ways for transforming a lawn into a green space that is its own ecosystem. A time for questions is built into the schedule.

Clubs and societies that host guest speakers can have handouts created by area Stationery printers. They can also prepare items such as Corporate Gifts to give to the presenter to thank them for their efforts.

The Edmonton Permaculture Guild will present this introduction to native plants and why they matter so much on February 12. It will be on offer at Ritchie Community League.
