New riding opportunity in Edmonton breaks ground

Edmonton will soon be home to a new horseback riding facility.

The ground was recently broken for the construction of the Whitemud Equine Centre. In keeping with the future use of the building, two large horses hitched to a traditional style plow were used to make the inaugural dig at the site that will house the $6.5 million building.

According to Kent Rowan, who is a member of the board of the Whitemud Equine Learning Centre Association, a lot of effort has gone into making the new structure a reality, and he is thrilled to see the actual physical work begin. He went on to say that there is still a long way to go before it will be completed, and he hopes that the board will continue to have the community’s support to reach this goal. Banners can be used to help decorate the ribbon cutting ceremony when projects such as this are completed and ready for use.

The new heated barn will be used for a variety of purposes, including programs that give those with disabilities or other special needs an opportunity to ride and interact with horses. City councillor Michael Walters pointed out that this could be very beneficial to people in that situation.

Part of the tab for the project is being covered by the city, which contributed $4 million of the total cost of the build.
