Military memorial centre of downtown art project

The Edmonton Public Art council is currently short listing several local area artists for a commission to create a military commemorative art installation on 102A Ave in the city’s core.

Print services in Edmonton support the arts community in the provincial capital and assist in the production of artistic renderings for similar projects. The project under consideration is entitled “Edmonton: a Home for its Citizens in the Armed Forces”.

Artists under consideration for the project have been given a $300,000 budget and a projected deadline of Spring 2012.

The memorial will not pay tribute to one particular aspect of the Canadian military. It will encompass the navy, air force and land forces including Lord Strathcona’s Horse and Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry (PPCLI).

CFB Edmonton is now the headquarters for the Land Forces Western Area, western Canada’s top military authority and home to the most experienced and prestigious units in our country’s armed forces.

The art installation will also capture the history of Edmonton’s contributions to the Canadian Forces and pay tribute to Edmontonians who have given their lives to our nation’s security and peacekeeping activities in the recent past.

The memorial will become part of the 102A Ave integration project, which will make Churchill Square and Edmonton’s Civic Plaza a year-round venue for public events and a destination for community activities such as runs and walks. The Edmonton Public Art Council and The City of Edmonton will work together on the project, hiring a local artist who will best meet the extensive criteria laid out in the recent Call for Artists.
