Charter companies and associated businesses at the small airport will have no choice but to relocate once the runway closes for good, so investors in the Capital Region are prepared to lay down as much as $25 million for a new facility in Parkland County.
Property south of the bedroom community of Spruce Grove is being considered said the president of the Parkland Airport Development Corporation, Robert Gilgen:
"We feel that there's really a mid-segment of the market that's corporate and government and military ... and the medevac flights that will use this airport because it’s so close to the city."
As of next month, the province of Alberta has arranged for medevac flights to relocate to the Edmonton International Airport, south of the city.
Should the airstrip move, new opportunities will be created for small industrial parks to service a new airport. There will also be the chance for Print services to fulfill the needs of new businesses by providing Stationery and business card printing.
Although Parkland Airport Development is eager to move forward and hopes to start building in 2014, the rural municipality has not yet received an application. Paul Hanlon, planning manager for Parkland County, said that there is no current provision for a small airport in his jurisdiction.
Parkland is currently being served by Villenueve Airport, which is located in an adjacent county.
