A campaign is underway in Edmonton that its organizers hope will bring a sense of dignity and raise the morale of disadvantaged youth throughout the city.
The Undies4Youth drive
, which is being undertaken by the Junior Chamber International Edmonton, will benefit Youth Empowerment and Support Services (YESS), and is a follow-up to its previous campaign in which it collected 1,000 pairs of socks. This time, the goal is to collect 1,000 pairs of underwear. Flyers, placed in locations throughout the city, can help a campaign like this to meet, or even exceed, its goals.
Shant Chakmakian, director of strategic partnerships with the junior chamber, explained that having a clean change of underwear may seem like a small thing, but it can go a long way towards bringing back a feeling of dignity and self-worth to a youth who is experiencing hardship. He noted that last year, YESS helped more than 450 young people, and gave away as many as 100 pairs of underwear in just one week as part of its efforts to meet their basic needs.
Donations will be accepted until March 31st. They can be dropped off at the Armoury Resource Centre, located at 10310 85th avenue or at the main offices of YESS, which can be found at 9310 82nd Avenue. Both men’s and women’s styles will be appreciated. Those who want to learn more can visit the Youth Empowerment & Support Services website.
