Edmonton hospital receives art donation

Thanks to a donation by a local collector, the University of Alberta’s Hospital Foundation will soon have an extensive collection of artwork to put on display.

Orthodontist Roland Haryett has been collecting pieces of art throughout his 40-year career, hanging them on the walls in his offices. Though he started displaying them for his own enjoyment, he soon noticed that his patients enjoyed them every bit as much and were able to relax more easily.

He thought that they may have the same effect in a hospital setting.

The collection consists of 200 items, and includes works of aboriginal and western art, much of it created by well-known artists. This is the one of the largest donations of art ever made to the hospital.

To mark the event, 50 pieces will be put on public display in the main floor gallery of the hospital, where they will remain available for public viewing for four weeks. Once that period of time is up, they will be used to decorate the buildings throughout the complex.

It’s hoped that they will help to make patients’ time in the hospital a little more pleasant.

Brochure printers will be able to create catalogs that describe each of the pieces for visitors to use while they are browsing the collection. This information will help them to enjoy the pieces even more.
