Nicole Chatterton, an educator working in the Edmonton area, is one of only a handful of Canadians who have made the shortlist to win an award.
Chatterton, who teaches with the Child Study Centre at the Garneau School, was nominated for the Everyday Political Citizen Award based on her work with schoolchildren. Together, they have completed a wide variety of projects designed to help the kids learn while developing an awareness of the issues facing society.
One of their assignments was to build a model city, named ‘Garneaupia’, which followed the principles of sustainable development. They talked to experts in the field to get ideas on how to plan their city. As it turns out, the build ended up meeting all the aspects of what the urban planner Richard Florida would consider to be part of a “great city”.
The students also made packs for the homeless and learned more about the steps they could take to help reduce the levels of garbage they produce.
The Everyday Political Citizen Award is handed out by Toronto-based Samara Canada. The prize celebrates those who work every day to promote democracy in action in Canada.
