Brian Webb is the founder on the Brian Webb Dance Company, in Edmonton. It was formed over 30 years ago. Webb has been nominated for an award given to a person who has made an excellent contribution in Edmonton, to the arts scene. He has been nominated for the ATCO Gas Lifetime Achievement Award.
In 2002, Webb was hired by the Canadian Dance Festival, as the artistic director. This past October, Webb had a heart attack and, as a result, he has lightened his workload. In June, he will step down from his position of artistic director, after the festival. Sam Uhlick, potter, was also nominated for a lifetime achievement award. Another nominee is Charles Thomas Peacocke who used to head the drama department at the University of Alberta. Al Rasko, who used to be the executive director of the Fringe Theatre Adventures, also received a nomination.
On April 11, the awards, which are held annually, will be presented. This is to take place at the Winspear Centre.
The Book Prize has three Edmonton authors vying for the prize. They are Myrna Kostash, author of Prodigal Daughter, A Journey to Byzantium (University of Alberta Press), Rudy Wiebe, author of Rudy Wiebe: Collected Stories (published by the University of Alberta Press) and Tim Bowling, for his book The Suicide’s Library (published by Gaspereau Press).
Brochure printers in Edmonton will be busy producing materials to promote the event. The Brochures, together with Posters, will be sure to bring many to the 2011 Mayor’s Arts Awards.
