Edmonton crosswalk improvement spots highlighted
A recent report presented to Edmonton’s city council will help planners to determine which pedestrian crosswalks are most in need of an upgrade.
The city has identified making itself friendly to those who choose to walk or ride their bike as a method to get around as a top priority, and it is felt that improving crossing areas will help to make this possible.
Nine different crosswalks have been identified as needing an improvement, and this could mean either a flashing amber light or pedestrian activated signal to warn vehicle drivers that someone is trying to cross the street. Some other options that are being investigated include adding increased fluorescent lighting or rapidly flashing beacons to signs, which can help to make them more noticeable to drivers who may not be paying as close attention as they should. A printing company can create posters that let the public know about these enhancements and ask them to be more vigilant when driving through the areas, as this can reduce the number of accidents.
Edmonton’s transportation services prepared the report, which also outlines the areas that are already seeing upgrades implemented, such as those near seniors’ centres and schools. It will also determine what other areas need them the most, based on factors like the rate and speed of traffic, and the number of pedestrians.
