Edmonton area clinics provide measles immunization
The recent measles outbreak has prompted Alberta Health Services to urge parents in the Edmonton area to get their children immunized.
In order to speed up the process and make it as efficient as possible, AHS is booking individual appointments at its 22 public health care centers across the city. It is hoped that this will allow people to get their children the vaccine within two days of calling.
These appointments can be made through the Health Link service, which has been receiving a lot of calls from parents wishing to book a time to bring their children in.
To help answer the increased volume of calls, AHS has diverted 50 of its employees to its call center.
The organisation is also looking at extending the operating hours of the public health care centers to include evenings and weekends.
Parents are strongly encouraged to get the vaccine for children aged 6-12 months. Typically, it is given at the age of 12 months, but this earlier needle will give temporary protection. Any child over a year old can get the regular shot.
This system of booking appointments is different compared to that being offered in other Alberta communities where people are lining up to get their needles; this is because Edmonton has a higher number of public healthcare centers.
Measles is a disease that can be very serious for young children. Poster printing companies can create advertising that lets people know just how vital it is that they get theirs protected.
